Holi Festival 2011
The Festival of colours HOLI is one of the most exuberant Hindu festivals of India. Holi is celebrated annually in the Hindu month of Phagun on Purnima, the day of full moon which comes in February end or early March. Holi is one of the oldest festivals of India. The festival is celebrated all across the globe with so much fun and frisk that the very mention of the word ‘Holi’ draws smile and enthusiasm amongst the people.
Holi is a two days celebration started on the first day, bonfires are lit at night to imply burning the demoness Holika, Hiranyakashipu’s sister. On the second day known as Dhuleti, when people are left on their own- from hurling abuses to spraying and sprinkling colours, dancing like mad, and drinking Bhang and Thandai. While it’s easy to buy colours in today’s market, many people make the colours at home from tesu and palash flowers. The Festival is celebrated by all ages, and shops and offices are routinely closed for the main event. In the evening the atmosphere becomes sober, people visit the houses of friends and relatives, smudge Gulal, and exchange good wishes and seek blessings.
India is blessed with a huge number of festivals and Holi is one of the most joyous occasions for the Hindu community.
Holi 2011 is on Sunday 20th March.
